Depending upon who is collecting the statistics, there are anywhere between 5,000 to 25,000 regular heroin users in Toronto. Most of these people have one thing in common, they’ve thought about kicking the habit. They may even have tried a couple of times. Others, like myself, were motivated enough to break the habit on the first try. There are basically two ways to break a heroin addiction. The user can just stop—go cold turkey—and suffer the physical and emotional hell of withdrawal, or the user can get into a methadone program and swap the heroin habit for a methadone habit. Ibogaine, a non-narcotic, non-addictive drug, could offer up a third option. Ibogaine comes from a shrub found in the rainforests of western Africa. The people there have used ibogaine for centuries as an upper to help them stay alert when hunting, or for inducing visions during initiation rites. Among the secret societies of Gabon and the Congo, ibogaine is closely associated with death. The plant that produces the drug is often described as a supernatural being which can carry someone away to the realm of the dead. Actual death by overdose is possible, but heavy users usually just slide into [...]

Over the last two months a debate has been going on over the ethics of retouching photos used in beauty and fashion advertisements. During the same period the food industry spent approximately 1.7 billion USD on fast food ads aimed at children ($10 billion a year). Critics of the use of retouched images claim the ads foster a feeling of inadequacy in young women and may encourage some to develop eating disorders. Poor body image and eating disorders are important issues for women but childhood and teenage obesity has reached epidemic status in developed nations. While we fuss and fidget over the degree of photoshopping of a photo of an actress or model kids are gobbling down Big Macs, super-sized fries and soft drinks at an unheard of rate, and advertisers and marketers are helping them along. The study, Food for Thought: Television Food Advertising to Children in the United States (released July, 2006) combined content analysis of TV ads with detailed data about kids’ viewing habits in order to provide an estimate of the number and type of TV ads seen by children of various ages. This study used more than 1600 hours of programming and covered all the [...]

It’s difficult to say when food became fashionable but no one can deny that fashionable eating is a part of living a fashionable life. The downside of this is that many unworthy dishes have evolved into being pretentious, and I hate pretentious food. Don’t get me wrong; I love food and I eat like a bird, which means I eat often and I often eat a lot. Imagine how much energy a bird uses when he flies, usually in the hunt for food; birds need to eat like they mean it. Lollipop models and actresses don’t eat like birds, they eat as if they loathe or fear food, or enjoy deprivation. Not me. Good food is a pleasure and I’m a hedonist. Various dishes became pretentious around the same time we gave skilled chefs popular celebrity status, an accolade few deserve. Cooking is not that hard and anyone who can read and do simple math can create delicious meals for themselves and their families. British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has proved this many times on his various TV shows. Wolfgang Puck is a fine example of a celeb chef who has taken a basic dish – the hamburger – and [...]

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Mario’s Cafe in Westhoughton, a parish of the Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, do a big breakfast for £10 (about $18.75 CDN). Eat it all in 20 mins. without a drink to wash it down and you get it free! The feast consists of 10 eggs, 10 rashers of bacon, 10 sausages, 10 slices of toast, 5 servings of black pudding, tomatoes, a serving of beans, and mushrooms. Black pudding, as made in the UK, is a blend of onions, pork fat, oatmeal, flavourings, and blood (usually from a pig). The ingredients are blended until everything congeals, stuffed into sausage casings, baked, then sliced into patties and fried – it’s an acquired taste. I live in a lose-weight/eat-healthy society so I had to crunch the numbers. Calories: beans (one serving) – 150 cal. black puddings (5) – 500 cal. eggs (10) – 900 cal rashers of bacon (10) – 500 cal. sausages (10) – 1500 cal. toast (10 slices) – 1200 cal. mushrooms – negligible tomatoes – negligible TOTAL: 4750 mouth-watering, lip-smackin’ calories. The basic daily energy requirement for an adult woman is about 2000 calories, guys can [...]
